Hi guys. Attached is the latest official firmware for Philips 5960/12.

I played around with MTKRemaker and Font tool trying to change the subtitle font. I wanted a larger font, no grey background and with black outlining.

I found out that the Font numer 1 is actually used for almost all the text in the player (subtitles, most text in the filebrowser and on-screen messages). This makes it difficult to change it to a very big font because then the other parts would look stupid. Unless the firmware can be hacked to use different fonts for these areas. This I can't do.

Another issue is that the subtitle text has a grey background. Just changing the font isn't going to make it go away I suppose. I tried also MTZs font which looks great in my old player but Philips displays the fonts inverted, meaning the background is still grey and the font itself is white, also the black outlinging of letters.

Of course, also the filebrowser suffers from the 14 character limitation.

So, these are the issues. Are there any good firmware hackers willing to take a look at this little piece of code? Or give instructions.

1- make a new and outlined font with mtkfontmaker (Arial narrow 23-24-24-25)
2- Export as a bmp
3- replace gray color with red and black outlined color with blue with photoshop and save
4- import this bmp again with mtkfontcreater and export as a font
5- replace font 2,3,4 with this new font in mtkremarker.

Strangely I couldn't do this with Photoshop elements 3, the Color replace tool just wouldn't work with the BMP! I managed to do it with Irfanview though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Patched the firmware and flashed it to my player and
- The font background is still grey
- The font outline is still not black
- The font itself is white as supposed to

Maybe the colors weren't exactly the right ones? Got any RGB codes?

Also, because the same font is used in other places the text looks oversized in those areas. This will probably require some advanced firwmare hacking to make the player use a different font for subtitles and screen menus etc.

You can use This Firmware

This firmware have a big, black outlined and without gray background font for divx subtitle. Fixed only this bug. Tested, not have a problem.

Regards.

Thank you! The font looks very nice, just what I was looking for.

Just out of curiosity: how come the font background is different color when opened in the MTKFontCreator (blue) and in the MTKReMaker (rec)? Basic stuff I guess, but I'm new to the subject.

Now, the next step is to find out how to show more characters in the filebrowser...

I'm going to buy Philips DVP 5960 DVD player, but since English is not my native language I will be using subtitles a lot, so could you tell me if this firmware shows corectly cyrilic subtitles - font, size, etc. Are the subtitles placed on the black stripe (for movies with 2.4:1 AR). Thank you very much in advance.

Do you know of any other hacks for the 5960? like turning off the HDCP requirement ?

And I would be pretty happy with a better filebrowser...
Meaning a smaller font, more lines and more characters on screen. Also in USB mode.

I actually requested Philips to make these improvements but they replied that they have no plans on releasing these kind of fixes "for now". They said they will still deliver the message to the tech.department. Yea right.

I guess if many of us request the same things they will take note of it? So fire away, send some emails to Philips (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

You can use This Firmware

This firmware have a big, black outlined and without gray background font for divx subtitle. Fixed only this bug. Tested, not have a problem.

Regards.

I am VERY interested in this firmware, but the download link doesn't work. Is it possible to post it as attachement on this forum or mail it to me?

And is this only a Turkish firmware or also English or Dutch?

[EDIT] Download works now! Firmware is in English and subs are perfect! Just pitty they are a little close to the screen bottom...

I made firmware with 1250 fonts (no gray background,31) and with new skin (edited background from Laza http://www2.freeweb.hu/lazadezign/index.htm)

Player always use font 1 [00-01] for menu and subtitle. Does anyone know how to change firmware to use other fonts?

Nice work Wireless.

It's really annoying that the same font is being used in both subtitles and in the menus/browser. This practically prevents one making a very small font for the filebrowser. At least my skills aren't good enough to hack the firmware to use another font for menus and filebrowser.

New firmware:

- 1250 subtitle fonts, white (no gray background,32).
- new osd font (no gray background,30, only english)
- long file names in browser (length 34, no extensions, no jpg preview)
- new skin fixed

Note : Still same font for browser and subtitles; ID3 tag mess browser. If someone can help? How to change coordinates of ID3 tag and move tags to bottom?

@Oam: Thanks. I hope someone will help with this.

Is it possible for you to make an American(5960/37) version of this? I actually tried this version and it messed it up the picture quality-everything was scrambled, I had to revert back to using my old firmware. I would be grateful for your assistance.

I am new to disassembling, only five days of experience (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) So, I don't know how to do it, believe me, I am walking in the dark here. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Maybe You just need to switch tv type: setup->2 times right -> 1 down -> ok -> 2 down -> ok -> 1 left -> ok

5 days experience? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) wow, except for the fact that my picture was scrambled and there was no sound, I was able to see the subtitles well. You did a great job with only 5 days working on something like this. I actually tried to do this myself--I am a total newbie to this as well. May you could explain to me the steps that you took to make the adjustments to your firmware file or perhaps a link to a tutorial for this? Thanks again.

Well, there is no universal tutorial. I read some documents from

http://personal.inet.fi/cool/mediatek/documents/index.html
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/mt13x9/
http://www.8052.com/tutorial.phtml

After that, I searched for locations in firmware. You can extract 8032 pages 1 and 3 with MTKReMaker from my firmware and compare with yours with UltraCompare. If you find that they have 3-4 different values just PM me locations and I'll send you hex value.

Someone else (naviga70?) made white text patch (compare bank3, 3b84 orig 30->50, 3b87 orig 01 -> 0A). I don't know is this safe to change in your firmware. I made long filenames, 1250 fonts and new skin.

This is beyond my knowledge of programming, but I do find this very interesting. Well, I don't really understand what I am suppose to look for from the pages 1 and 3 files, but I do see some differences. I've never used ultracompare before and I only used ultraEdit for webprogramming so I'm not sure how I'm supposed to read these bin files. So far, all I've done was replace some of font files in my firmware with a version of yours and just save to cd using mtkremaker. The cd would show up as "unknown" from the dvd player. I'm pretty sure I'm missing a step somewhere in remaking the bin file. Could you explain about how to look at "bank3"?

Just to save anyone else the trouble. I compared the changed code between wireless2104's firmware and the original 5960/12 (sixteen differences) and changed those same areas on the 5960/37 (the weird thing was after replacing bank 1 and 3 and saving the bin I had 19 differences instead of 16, but I thought maybe the checksum?). Firmware upgraded fine, but the file browser is still stuck at 8 characters. Wish I knew more about how to fix it, but that's as far as I've got so far. Thanks wireless2104 for the help and heads up on more resources.

hamaru05,

Not sure if I'm doing it right, but I just right click bank 3 and save that 64k section of code to view it by itself.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I've yet to be able to replace the modified bank 3 file with mtkremaker as suggested by wireless2104. The replace function is grayed-out, which was why I've only been replacing Data Part with the modified fonts from wirless2104's firmware.

Thanks for your's and wireless2104's help though.

hamaru05,

You have to enable "expert" mode under the Help in MTKReMaker. There's a warning for people like us who probably shouldn't be tinkering, but... I haven't compared wireless's bank 3 code with the bank 3 from the 5960/37, but the direct comparison code was so different I was afraid to just substitute the whole thing. I'll take a look at it. Let me know if you make any headway.

To wireless or anyone who has loaded his firmware:

Does the long file name support work through the USB? I figured the file browsers used the same code, but the firmware I made does support long file names on a DVD or CD, but not through USB. Thanks.

All of you Philips 5960 owners I have a good news. I send mail to Philips customer service in Germany, explaining that subtitle fonts for divx subtitles are not working, that the player always uses the OSD font for subtitles. They're respond the next day telling me that they're gonna try to fix this problem. Their answers were very kind and they've said that the're sorry for this incovienece and that they will present this problem to their software developers. So, I think that new firmware will arrive to fix this bug. They've also told me to regullary check the www.p4c.philips.com for software.
Such a good care for customers and professionalism is rare this days, especially for customer who bought their product costing only 85€.
Bravo Philips!

First of all I would like to thank wireless for his firmware and might I say great work!!!

I have the firmware running on my 5960. But the filebrowser mod does not seem to extend to the usb interface. Works great for DVD discs though.

I figure since it only took you 5 days to create this mod we should expect a usb version in let's say another 5 days? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

If you manage it you'll the first person to do it!!! Not to worry if you don't what you've done so far is brilliant.

Thanks

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Thank you phunkyfish, but I just followed instructions from documents I found in mt13x9 yahoo group.

Someone wrote that firmware doesn't have code for handling long filenames on usb.

I'll just try to transfer some other hacks from firmwares to this one.

If it's an avi file then just put them together on your usb stick. You should then have an avi, idx and sub files together. The names of the files must be the same (less the extensions of course) and the filename length must be less than 42 characters.

If your video file has a .divx extension then you must somehow combine the subs in with the divx file. That's all the .divx extension is, a container for avi, subs and other information...

I've had some luck with "Avi Sub" in the past: http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAviSub.html

There is a big chance to kill your player!!!

If you want to risk, burn cd (cd-r) with this options:
- no multisessions
- file system: iso 9660+ joliet
- label: Philips
- write speed: 4x
- write method: disc-at-once, finalize disc

wireless2104,

I've tried burning the firmware the same way it still came up 'unknown'. I managed to install your version of the bin by changing name from dvp5960_12.bin to dvp5960_37.bin for my player-this was how I did it the first time. Unfortunately, 5960/12 firmware will scramble the picture and have no sound on my dvd player, but at least I could see subtitles clearly.

To revert back to the proper firmware, I changed the name dvp5960_37.bin to dvp5960_12.bin. The disc loaded and upgraded back to what I had before.

Well, I'll keep reading up on those documents you posted, hopefully I can make some progress in at least getting subtitles without grey backgrounds for my firmware.

Yes, I forgot about this. You need to rename it.

Try this firmware. I hope I fixed subtitles:

This one have new skin:

Great job for long filenames support! I am now fighting with HDMI output which does not allow to use 720P mode, is there any changes to forget all EDID data which come from my projector via cable to 5960 by firmware modding? I'll preciate a lot if somebody could help with this problem. My model is 5960/12. These HDMI problems are very common because projectors and monitors have not so well done edid data and of course problem could exists inside dvd player also (or worst case: both have bugs).

Best solution would be if you could force through all output resolutions by pressing the upscaling button front of 5960.

Great job wireless! Please go on exploring the firmware to make some more improvements. Keep up the good work!

A suggestion: Is it possible to use a narrow font for the subtitles? All my .srt files are up to 48 characters in one line, and they don't fit on the screen on a 4:3 resolution.

And is there a chance to fix the rewind bug (always 32 speed) ?
