QUOTE (Applecorner @ Oct 25 2008, 05:16) Hello vb6rocod,
you are modifying the firmware with the tool MTKReMaker? If so, where can I find exactly where the body of the long filenames Support Act fourth.
My Yamaha 661 player has the same MTK chip and then I would like to have the long filenames. Nothing to do with any "visual" tools like MTKRemaker. You need a disassembler like IDA.

vb6rocod,
Thank you so much for the wonderful firmware! I have installed it on my 5992/37 and works great.
Do you think you can make one with Korean subtitle support in AVI mode? I would like to do myself but it seems there are a lot to learn to make it happen. It loads .smi file but the font isn't available to display properly.
Thank you,
Jae

Jae It's really hard for me. You need Korean fonts for subtitles. In original firmware ( model 37) are some fonts, but I don't know if this are Korean or not. Also fonts are with no outline. Get MTKRemaker and open firmware and see witch font is for Korean. If any of this are for Korean I will try to add this (It's difficult but I guess I can make this). Other option is to use MTKFontCreator. Open ini file and "map" all char (0-5xx) to unicod value, see how they are for other CP. Then make your font with outline, send me... This is the best option but take some time to make this. Other option is to find a firmware with Korean fonts and get fonts from there.

I appreciate your time and effort. It looks a lot harder than I guessed to make Korean displayed. Thank you for the information! Hi vb6rocod, Which are the subtitle formats supported by your v6 firmware (i use DVP 5990/12)? I noticed that the .txt and .sub are not supported (or alt least not loaded automatically), but yesterday i noticed one .SRT not loading. I've checked the subtitle section in the menus, everything seems to be ok over there (all subs from the current dir should load, irrespective of name). The subtitle file name is not the same as the movie file, they are called: He Was a Quiet Man[2007]DvDrip[Eng]-FXG.avi He Was a Quiet Man (Eng Subs).srtI've also checked the subtitle file to make sure the content isn't garbled...it isn't, it seems fine: CODE -----cut----- 663 00:35:35,567 --> 00:35:37,601 <i>Dr. Steven Chang...</i>
664 00:35:37,601 --> 00:35:39,801 Hi.
665 00:35:41,901 --> 00:35:45,300 Can you close the door, please? -----cut----- Any idea why is this not working?

Hello again. -I'm using a Corsair Flash Voyager GT (16GB) for the DVP. In FAT32 everything works perfect...but not in NTFS. Isn't it possible using NTFS file format!?

Greetings Nope! (IMG: style_emoticons/default/no.gif) The same holds for external HDD drives: only FAT partitions are recognized...and i think there's also a size limitation...i therefore formatted my 320 GB external HDD to have two FAT partitions of equal size. Both of them are accesible, they're called USB1 and USB2 and you can switch between them using the remote control (IMG: style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

That also means that you can't use large files (>=4GB) with that player...really sad. Another question: The player's drive is pretty loud...is that okay!?How about yours?! Regards

As far as I'm concerned, my 320gb external drive works just fine, partitioned in two equal partitions. Both partitions are visible, so i don't care if the (per-partition) limit is 200Gb or 8Tb or anything else (IMG: style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Hello vb6rocod,
I flash my new DVP-5990/12 with "DVP5990_12_vb6_v6 - CP1252" and it works really nice, great firmware.
The only drawback is really the high volume output and reset to 20 after CD/DVD change, I cant mute the sound with volume down on TV and the Player is much louder than all other components. If volume saving don't work please lower the default Setting, about 10-15 would be nice.
I use SCART as connection, maybe there is a volume setting for different connections?

Situation: an external HDD with (let's say...) 10 movies on it. The movies are displayed in the file browser of the 5990 in alphabetical order of the dir name. After a while, i copied some more movies on the HDD (let's say 20 more...). If i browse the content of the drive, the file browser first shows the earlier 10 dirs and only after them (by scrolling down) the latter 20 dirs (IMG: style_emoticons/default/confusedsmiley.png) Can it be that the file browser displays them ordered by date? ...because this is really stupid...

That's not stupid, that's FAT32 for you: the entries are displayed in the very order they've been written to the FAT. Thank Micros~1 for that.
BTW, does anyone else have trouble with CBR MP3s skipping up to a second from the beginning when selecting the next file?

Oh, please don't mix up things, you'll confuse other people, too...! (IMG: style_emoticons/default/mellow.gif) FAT it's just an file system and file systems are used as a organization of files. No constraints are put on any ordering of the files! If the things are as you suggest, then no one could ever be able to sort the files stored on a FAT32 disk in a different order, and this is absolutely not true! So, the problem is in the way the FileBrowser of the DVP handles the files...It has a function called "file filter" who decides the order in which the files are displayed on the screen. Apparently, this "filter" displays the files in the creation order, but this has nothing to do with the file system! @vb6rocod: Could you please confirm this? Which is the default ordering of the files? Can it be changed to something more reasonable, like, for instance, alphabetical descending order on file / directory name? Remember, this is not an real issue if one plays movie files from a CD/DVD/USB stick which usually contains quite few files...It begins being a problem with large external hard drives, when someone has hundreds of files.... For instance: i have 399 movie files already and i copy one more (let's say "armageddon.avi"). After i plug in the HDD, i need to press "DOWN" on the remote controller 101 times (only 4 file names are showed at a time on the screen - another ugly limitation!) before I reach the last-copied file, which is usually the movie i'd like to see next (IMG: style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) If they would be sorted alphabetically, I'd only need 2-3 button presses to play the very same file (IMG: style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) Just think about this... QUOTE (dinu_s @ Oct 31 2008, 11:00) Oh, please don't mix up things, you'll confuse other people, too...! (IMG: style_emoticons/default/mellow.gif) I suggest you read up on it a bit. The creation order is written to the FAT which IS part of the file system. The fact that an OS like Windows is able to list files in a different order does not say anything about the filesystem itself. Standalones as well as car radios and mp3 players that don't have a database suffer from the same problem: The files are displayed in order they've been written to the FAT which even gets more messy in case you deleted some files from in between. Cause if the new files/entries are larger than the previous ones copying over files numbered from say 1-20 might get them listed in a different order. QUOTE (dinu_s @ Oct 31 2008, 11:00) If they would be sorted alphabetically, I'd only need 2-3 button presses to play the very same file Unless of course the movie name starts with 'z'. So our best bet is to find someone skilled who is willing to implement the First to last and last to first filelist patch or some of my ideas like pageup/down or folder navigation. In case you're eager to see these features implemented please consider donating so Hej456 can buy the player. Thanks.

Hi there,
Bought the DVP5990/12 based on vb6 modified firmware and hdmi/usb features. Thanks for making the choice easier.
Is there a way to turn off the screensaver though? it keeps going into screensaver mode after a couple mins in pauze mode.
Would it be possible to add the aspect ratios 4:3 letterbox/4:3 panscan/16-9 to the remote control under zoom or any other button for that matter?
My 2 year old LG DVD player has this option under zoom that lets you (apart from zooming) stretch the movie height so you see less black bars on top and bottom when you play a 640 x 272 movie file for instance. In order to that with the DVP5990 i have to go into the setup menu and change the aspect ratio to 16-9. Seems easier if you could just change that setting from the remote instead of having to go back and forth to change aspect ratio in the setup menu when you have movie files with different width and height.
Regards
J.D

Could you please give a link or info on doing serial programming? I suffered a flashing failure and the unit only shows "PHILIPS" on the display at start.
I got a refurbished unit from out of country, so warranty repairs are a big problem.
I assume it's to the 4 pin header on the board, but I would need to know the pinout, and communication parameters for the port - and I guess the method of transfering the image.

Should I be using the Mtktool software (I found V1.31)? I found Mktool 2.42.12 now, and from AVSForums understand that the chipset is MT1389, so I will build the cable and try. Do I need to do anything to the Disc/USB .bin file for serial upgrade? i.e quote from Tripper: I was able to get this working on 5990/37 by adding HDCP block and flashing with serial

I think I'm gonna order mine this week (Belgium). Is it OK to upgrade instantaniously to version "DVP5990_12_vb6_v6.rar" without doing previous releases? ---------------------------- Only 4 folders visible at the same time when accessing content on USB disk/stick? Simple solution to speed up the search process: 26 main folders which represent the 26 characters in the alfabet, subfolders=movie titles starting with that specific letter. So you get: A -Armageddon -Along Came Polly -...... B -Black Hawk Down -Beverly Hills Cop -.... and so on -> you don't have to wait an hour to reach the last movie put on disk. The reason I'm thinking to buy one: then I can attach my LaCie Silverscreen 320GB to it. -> http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=158100My television doesn't playback correctly from Silverscreen when connection is made via SCART (scart plug on TV is the problem), so I would replace my DVP5500s player with the newer DVP5990 -> I can indirectly play the content on the hard drive without a problem.

Dear vb6rocod, Sorry for bothering you, but I have a question, concerning DTS decoding. I found, that modification DVP5996K/51 for Russia, Ukraine and Bulgaria have Multichannel DTS decoder with corresponding HW audio outputs. On other side, his latest FW v31 is the same as for DVP5990/37 (USA, Canada version) v31. EU FW v34 (latest) and Russian v31 differing in Code Part / 8032. DVP5990/12 is with Versio CD.0F.12.E4 and 8032 - AB.D0.D0.92, DVP5990/37 & DVP5996K/51 has versio 47.E0.F5.30 and 8032 - 20.0C.65.10. Servo, RISC and DSP parts are with the same versions. Can we use FW for DVP5990/37 & DVP5996K/51 on ours DVP5990/12 without "killing" the player? It is possible in that way somehow to unlock DTS decoder and use them for 2ch Downmix?
Thank you in advance!

Thank you in advance! No, DTS is hardware decode.

Hey vb6,
Could you add a screensaver on/off option in your next firmware update?
Also i noticed the DVP5990 stays in standby mode, no way to turn it off completly unless you disconnect the electricity cable. Is this hardware related so nothing can be changed about it or can it be fixed by a firmware update? For safety reasons i'm not too crazy about devices that stay in standby mode.
Cheers,
J.D

Of course it is hardware related or do you see any real on/off switch on the player? Manufacturing standby devices is cheaper so you gotta get yourself a (smart) power strip with switch.
