I have a Pioneer DV-380-k with a firmware version 1.09. Could you please tell me if this is the latest available update for this player. I have problem with the DivX/XVid size of the subtitles, as sometimes they do not show up at all, even if I observe all the requirements for the name of the file. Does the update solve this? I am using Bulgarian subtitles. Thanks for the reply.

Attached is Gufiak's 01.09.03.01 version (for CodePage 1252) with ORIGINAL

in my humble opinion. This mod is the original Gufiak mod, the only difference
are the background screens, no more, no less.

Does it shows bigger subtitles ?
Must file & subtitle names be the same because my Pio 393 doesn't show them if they are different.
Pressing HOME MENU,INITIAL SETTINGS,OPTIONS it shows that my firmware is YDA6419B (Serbian version), I don't know toes it have something with Gufiak 1.16.01 or similar version because nobody has firmware with YDA letters.

What you mean?... The size of the subtitles' characters, or the filename size?
With this mod the filename can have more than 40 chars, and the char size of
the subtitles are bigger than original.

I don't think DV-393 is compatible with this MOD...
Please, don't try to use it, or you can finish with a dead player in your hands...

This topic is about FW for players as in topic's title. Your player has totaly different fw and will not work with this one.
Modiffication you mantioned about (1.16.01 for dv-393) is in fact made by me, not Gufiak. Gufiak has not worked on it yet, as he still needs more free time. It is described as "Gufiak's" only because we are the same team, pioneer freaks wink.gif.
There is no fw for your player that solves the problem with file names and others, yet. You need to wait and be very patient.
You may have different (newer?) original fw version on your player. If you know how to extract it would be nice if you do that. If you do not know, do not try it as you may finish with dead player.

What are the options activated in this firmware?

P.S. I've found they in the Gufiak forum:

v.1.21.02 (28-12-2006)
- Bigger font for Subtitles in MPEG4 (CP1250,1251,1252,1253,1254,1255);
- Support for 50 chars in File Browser (CP1252);
- New OSD Font.

v.1.21.01 (26/12/2006):
- White MPEG4 Subtitles outlined with black;
- Removed grey background in MPEG4 Subtitles;
- Bigger font for Subtitles in MPEG4 (CP1252);
- New MPEG4 Subtitle Area/Position;
- Bottom aligned Subtitles in MPEG4;
- Fixed bug with .SRT and .IDX/SUB Subtitles timing;
- 50 character bug fixed: MPEG4 Subtitles will be loaded if filenames are too long;
- Support for 42 chars in File Browser (CP1252);
- New File Browser image to support longer names;
- JPEG Preview disabled;
- Support for special chars in File Browser (250-255 chars are truncated);
- Shuffle function under "Surround" button.

It seems there aren't the advanced audio options (Treble boost/Bass Boost/Super bass)
as in the 1.0.9.3 firmware, is this correct?

What Fw you used? Where did you get it? What language are masseges?
If messages are like: Wczytuje, Zamykam, Pusto, Otwieram etc., thay are in Polish. This means, there are some add-ons in it, that were made by me. tongue.gif I wonder, how you could get it dry.gif
When Enter is pressed and holded till the player shuts-off, the player is region 0. Even, if it still showes region 2 or any other.

You can't update the firmware until you solve the original problem with te service remote?

I've been trying to update the FW but the unit keep showing the menu to select region and wont read the BIN file from the CD
gufiak
Problem with region selection menu can be easily solved with RS232 cable.
1. Connect cable to the player and PC.
2. Power up your player, wait until region selection menu will appear.
3. Run MtkTool on PC.
2. In MtkTool click toolbar button with compact disc icon (R/W Register).
3. Select "8032 XDATA"
4. In "Addr" field enter FB00 (F, B and two zeros)
5. In "Data" field enter 9C if your player's original region is 2, 9E if your player's original region is 4 or 9F if your player's original region is 5.
6. Click "Write". Region selection menu should disappear.
That's all.

And remember:
Never try to load new firmware if your player displays this message! I don't know how new players reacts for such operation, but in DV-470/575 players, after upgrading when region is not set, appear blinking "NO ID NUM" on VFD and it's very annoying. It displays almost all the time when player is powered on.

BTW. Such problem appears when eeprom is somehow resetted, corrupted or damaged.

Thanks a lot for the information Gufiak. I am very new on this and I'm going to do my homework in how to make the RS232 interface and install the MtkTool .

What would be the data that I have to enter if my unit shows that it has REGION: 0 and ROM VERSION: 1.07 ?

I bought this unit region free but it is that the original region?

Thanks a lot for sharing your knoledge...
gufiak
proalsren, this solution is for annoying "Region menu" which is displayed when region information somehow has been lost. As I understand you don't have this problem. If you have region free player, you should be happy and probably you don't have any reason to change the region setting in your player. Correct me if I'm wrong.

This is a Pioneer 383-S . As soon as I power the unit up the "annoying Region menu" shows on the TV.
I try to play two DVDs, one is NTSC the other one is PAL. Both play but only up to the main menu and then I can't select anything in the menu and i't won't play the movies.

The only way that that menu goes away is when I open the tray on the player.
I checked and the ROM version is 1.07 and the Region is 0. I guess it still region free and my main problem is that, I need to get rid of the Region select menu.

What I don't know is if when I follow the instructions and I type the data 9C using the MtkTool , would the player lose the region free? Would I have to type 9A for the data at FB00 instead?

I built a circuit called Tiny_3wires serial interface that I found on the net but I haven't been able to make it work
Thanks a lot for your patience

Even, if you loose region 0, you may update your player with Gufiak's mod fw for dv380/383/585, that sets region 0 again. This Fw is based on firmware 1.09, that is better then 1.07. So far, you may also update your player with moddyfied fw by Chiesa, based on 1.21. This fw also has feature to set region 0, and 1.21 is the newest original fw, avalible for this player.
gufiak
proalsren, now I understand smile.gif Follow the instructions and set region 2 (BTW where are you from? If your area region is not region 2, then set region region appropriate to your area). You can't enter 9A, because player won't accept it. Player accepts only 3 values: 9C, 9E and 9F. You have to set region that will be the default player region. After that you can make your player region free again by typying B9 in "Data" field (leave FB00 in "Addr" field). If your player will shutdown after this operation, then it will be region free for sure (but it will show player's default region, for example '2' if you set region 2, which will be disabled in last operation). If it will not shutdown, click the toolbar button with exclamation mark surrounded by an arrow and if still it won't work, then try to restart, reconnect player or restart MtkTool.

Thanks to Dinderi and Gufiak for your teachings.
To make the story short, everything worked perfectly and identically as Gufiak described.

I am in the US but I set the unit with code 9E. The player was only playing a PAL movie and not my NTSC, then I did it with data B9. The player now plays both PAL and NTSC, and I guess is region free even that still displays being region 4.
Now I will try changing the firmware with the Gufiak's FW. I hope I don't make mistakes, otherwise I will be the "annoying" here.

I had problems making the Tiny_3Wire interface work, because the voltage that I was getting from the pin 4 of the RS232 was I guess too weak. I replaced it with 6 volts from an external power supply and then my signal level was the 3 volts needed.
Thanks again and I wish you success...
gufiak
QUOTE

Yes, it is. This displayed region is what I called "default region" in my previous post. In pioneer case, making this player region free, not exactly means setting it's region to region 0. In pioneer it is treated as temporary disabled region checking and it's probably done for service centers to check players. After disabling region checking, player still remembers old region setting and with command BC it can be enabled again (BC entered in "Data" field in MtkTool).

Anyone know some method to burn for the correct way?

@gufiak

is it possible to port the divx-ultra code from the divx ultra certified device like the dv696, to older model like dv686 and below, so that we can use the extra menu/chapter features ?. I aware the .divx file plays fine on 686, but cant use the menu features!. I guess both the 696/686 use the same chipsets, so technically it shd be possible to port the ultra features on lower models!

any plans of doing this ? this would be gr8 smile.gif

I have a problem with divX playback using component output.
Everything worked fine with my old TV using SCART.

Now with component hte video is sent in 480p fomat regardless of the TV-type setting.
The problem is that the scaling to 480 lines is not correct. Information is lost in lower and upper parts in the picture and the proportions are not correct (people are two thin).
It looks like the player first scales up to 576 PAL lines and after that just crops the lines to 480.

Anyone with a hint or similari problems?

Hello Gufiak. I'm a Brazilian audiophile (Excuse-me, because my poor english). I had buy three units of Pioneer Dv-578A S (Made in China-Set2004) and try to upgrade with CD-Rom with MTZ 1252 v7.1 with support of Portuguese language (Gufiak 2.02.09). Two of three DVD-machines after upgrade, it´s Ok:
show me Dvix Vod number and play DviX files using a "test" CD with DviX and the Jpeg Title. Only one of three units of Dv-578 A, upgrade with the same news adjusts of colors,sound and subtitles for Dvix of the others 578A S, but only the Dvix VOD number registration don't appear. After upgrade completed, this player only encounter Jpeg files using the same CD with DviX files/JPeg files. Tis unit 578A Don´t shows the screen: MPG4 or Jpeg first: Appears DATA DISC on the display Unit. The menu discs appears only with Jpeg files, and only acess these photo formats. Because why? I try with this same CD, again and again to repair this upgrade: Nothing : Don´t recognized DviX (MPG4) Files for more once time, and the problem continued: Don´t see Dvix files and don't play them. What this Bug? Please, help-me! Thanks for your marvelous Site for us. Clovis

Just reporting on Gufiak's 1.09.03.01.

Seemed that "Play Mode->Search" wasn't working, but I've checked the disc and it was dirty as hell (dust). Cleaned it and voilá, problem solved.

All secundary remote functions do work. SACD and DVD-A playback work well too, including the super bass, bass and treble enhancers. Very useful for me, as I can't change bass and treble settings on my VSX D-509 while playing in 5.1 mode on DVD.

The equalizator works well with CD, DVD-V and SACD media; however, it does not work well with DVD-A. I've thought at first that it could be an issue with DVD-R media, but original pressed "Elis & Tom" DVD-A also feature the problem. Playback is jerky and a tad slowest when equalization is turned on - as if the processor on my DV-588A hadn't all the processing power to apply the equalization to the MLP stream of DVD-A.

Except for this little problem, so far, so good. Any news about when 1.21 will include all the changes made by Gufiak in his 1.09? I don't want to apply 1.21 by Håkan right now as audio is as important as video for me, and 1.21 still doesn't implement these changes.

Is this also when i upgrade the firmware for the dv-380. Will it be able to read more different dvd+rw?

When i upgrade firmwares for dvd-players in my computer. It can read more different mediacodes and be able to burn them.

Is this also when i upgrade the firmware for the dv-380. Will it be able to read more different dvd+rw?

Yes, although as it is now, it works with a lot of DVD+RW already
