Hmm, two remarks here:
1) subtitle fonts are not "multiple of 4", so you will probably encounter jerky playback
2) "INSERT DISC" text makes no sense for me, as it will be on the screen even when there is already CD loaded in CD-tray

i changed the fonts to multiples of 4. eventhough i couldnt see any jerkiness,
is it obvious or just slight?
the background looks nice, its not like you sit and watch it really,couldnt think of anything else.

Hello Gufiak

I am new to this forum but i read much of it

i just buyed the Pioneer 585A Region 2,so and my question is what if i flash it to v.01.09.02.00 mod firmware and then to the new 1.15 originals pioneers firmware
will it be region free?
i mean it will still be region 0 when i reflash it to the new 1.15 original firmware from pioneer or it will set back to region 2?

It's not exactly as you wrote. 1.09.02 is not regionfree firmware but with this FW you can make your player regionfree by pressing ENTER for about 5 seconds (player should restart). Then your player is regionfree even if you change FW to original.

Yes. With modified FW.
Don't enter file browser. Just press PLAY button and then VIRTUAL SURROUND button. Player shoult play mp3's from whole disc in random order.

I´m in the market for a new DVD Player.

With DviX capable players will I be able to save a few Dvix AVI files to a DVD and latter select the one I want to play?

Does it work like a DIR menu where I can select the file I want?

Help!
I guess I'm doing something wrong. I'm trying to download the firmware up grade for my Pioneer 588 but I can't get it to download. All I get is a "0"k file. My computer doesn't know what to do with a "RAR" file.
Is there another place to get this file? What am I doing wrong?

Maybe you can try another firmware posted in here (post 12, post 159, 176, 225, 245, 254, 260, 301, 303). When they all say they are damaged then it's a possibility that I (or someone else) can email it to you.

Turned out to be my Norton Anti Virus. Turned it off and it downloaded fine.

Hi Makaos,
Try this, http://www.pioneer.razorpoint.pl/download.html. There is 1.0.4 firmware for DV585 you can use. My drive's original firmware is 1.0.6.

Thanks for the work on the firmware. Great to have the more condensed text and the longer display. However, it froze so much playing avi and ogm I had to revert back to official v1.1.5. Also the secondary enter" key to make the drive region free is not working on my Canadian 588a. It shuts down with "*PAPA*" displayed on the LED panel. A Joke? I had to re-flash. Will definitely follow this thread.

Hi! Are there any firmware tools to change the "PAPA" message to "GOOD BYE",
"ADIOS", "HASTA LA VISTA" or any other message when the player is turned off?

To me "papa" means potato, dad, or the pope, doesn't makes much sense at all.

Also:
I just bought a Pioneer 588A-S with firmware v1.04. I don't know
what's available right now or what's new.

I have only used gufiak's

B5CA1096_gufiak_subz3ro_fixed firmware and it works fine.

Are there any NEWER (Not official, but tweaked) firmwares other than the
v.01.09.02.00 by gufiak THAT FEATURE the region free, automatic downmix
overide, etc etc tweaks ?
I know there's firmware v1.5, but it doesn't have all the cool improvement
hacks like gufiak's.

By the way, I found a background changing utility for certain
Pioneer firmwares.

I'm posting B5CA1096_gufiak_subz3ro_fixed firmwared with the original
logo just -to test if the utility works-.

WARNING:

PLEASE -ONLY- USE THIS FIRMWARE IF YOU ARE AN EXPERT AND/OR HAVE A
BACKUP CABLE TO RECOVER YOUR PLAYER IN CASE THAT IT STOPS
WORKING IT MIGHT CORRUPT THE FIRMWARE OR WHAT NOT
AS I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS UTILITY ACTUALLY WORKS.

Don't worry. Gufiak is alive and very, very busy. He has also his private life. But he promissed to work on FW if possible.

Hi everybody,

I'm sorry to bother you but ,believe me, I didn't find any answer in previous post for my problem (really), there are similar but not the same...

Now, the fact is that I use divx players (a kiss dp-500 modded, and a pioneer dv-380) just to watch anime cartoons fansub: with hard-encoded subtitles, on a 4:3 Sony tv.
Usually they are ripped straight from japanese tv, and they are 4:3 native.
Now, while the kiss after a couple of upgrades gained the "mpeg fullscreen" feature, wich allow to strech the image to fit the screen, many others players simply display divx/Xvid a little "zoomed" forward.. too much forward!
Sorry for my non technical language, but the fact is that I cannot even see subtitles cause they are cutted off the screen (and anyway I loose good part of the picture from every side..).
Now, I've updated the dv-380 with Gufiak firmware 9.2, but even tweaking from pal/ntsc and letterbox/panscan combinations nothing change, so the question is: is this a know problem solvible from someone by firmware modding, with a sort of "zoom-out/scaling/resize" feature?A link to someone who already discussed this could be enough!

Thanks a lot, and sorry for this newbie-question, but search this problem around forums is not so easy (with 75 pages average for results topic!)

I see many new people have joined this forum (which is indeed good).
It seems that gufiak has been recently overloaded, so I decided to make
a new release of current 1.09.02 firmware:
Changes in this revision:
- changed fonts (CP1250)
- some characters in Mtk's Large/VeryLarge font were shortened so they visually fit to subsequent chars
- brandnew Small/Medium font used (hope you like it)
- fixed menu fonts - finally for other than ENGLISH/POLISH menu, the Acute Accent (`) character is replaced by regular space character
- revert back to "-OFF-" (with blinking dash) as default by Pioneer due to some confusion seen here (btw, "PAPA" means the same as "BYE" in many slavonian languages)

- changed skin ... though I like my "blue" skin, it seems to be pretty over-exposed to be used on classic CRT screens

THANKS TO KARY for great pictures that were used as a template for current skin

Attached you can find the Greek fonts (CP1253) which you can replace for CP1250 in my rev.3 firmware.

I'm also using 380 model.

Could you also notice that some new menu text is not aligned in a line when using chinese menu interface?

Moreover, idx/sub subtitle is still hidden suddenly for some avi movies. I have to press fast forward/backward and then pause key to re-show the subtitle again.

Hello Gufiak,

There is a new version coming up with the ability to choose any subtitles in the same movie folder, even if the filename is different from the avi playing file ?
I've seen you offer the same useful feature in the fw release for the 575.
There is something in the 585 preventing you to offer this same feature ?

Does anybody know if...

Gufiak's future release will be based on Pioneer's latest Firm Ware? This is of importance to me because I prefer to use the RGB video mode. In all previous releases of the DV 380 FW, this mode makes the screen go black for all other devices connected to your TV, even if the dvd player is turned off!

i've noticed that when a line is quite big the last letters are cut instead of becoming a second line. if i remember well with some fw is used to split big lines instead of cutting them, any thoughts?

I think it's a fw problem and hopefully somebody will add the wrap function.
