Shit happens when you dont have the time to wait for the player to do its thing.
Indeed! I think some people think the player is stuck, but in some circumstances the update progress takes a few minutes (it seems the player is stuck, but it actually isn't and you just have to wait till it reboots).

Yes it is normal -- if it is Pal or NTSC depends on what TV system the last disc you played was in.
For not playing the disc I cant really say why it wont. It could be that the disc is RCE protected but I do have 3 RCE protected discs and they are playing just fine.
I did try to find out if your "Bowling" disc has the RCE protection but i couldnt find any info about that.

Gah, it's almost humiliating for me to ask and I know that this question might be slightly stupid. In my defence, I'm new to this firmware stuff and still learning.
Ok, I modified my DV-380 using Gufiak's patch and it works perfectly. I checked my region code and it's set to "0". Now my question ... brace yourselves:
If it's "0", does that mean that my player accepts every region code ... as in region code 2 for european dvds or vice versa?
I'd appreciate any kind answer and a little help.
Thanks a lot!

Mar 3 2006, 22:07
Yes it means that your player is regionfree, ie it accepts any disc with any region code.
Dont know about region 7,8 and 9 but the rest it should accept.
7 and 9 are reserved numbers. 8 are Sea, air and oilriggs = Special places

Hi all. New to this forum...
I'm planning to buy Pioneer DV 588S-A (or may be Philips 642). Now I just wonder if this player supports srt subtitles in languages (like Chinese/Japanese) other than English? And how is the Xvid support compared to 642?
btw, how do I back up the original firmware (in case of warranty issue)?
Thanks!

Hi,
I've just upgraded my Pioneer DV-380 with the Gufiak firmware but some Xvid movies won't play.
The sound doesn't match with the rest and the framerate is wrong (slow).
Other movies ( divx and xvid)) are working just fine.
What is wrong ?
Any help would be appreciated.

Good luck.
Yes I thinking the same...
The HTZ looks so good for all the features DivX, plus the 5.1 system and the radio tunner, although the disadvantage will be the firmwares updates for this model.

It is the packed bitstream issue. 25fps run fine but 23.976 stutters imagewise and
sound is slightly out of sync. very well known limitation of almost all mediatek based players.
Mpeg4modifer can be used to rewrite the file without packed bitstream, works fine.

It is normal for the CD to go out, let it stay there for a few minutes because it has already read the firmware, but hasn't flashed it already.
Upgrading the firmware :
Power on the DVD player,
Insert the disc,
when it says "upgrade file detected Upgrade? press play to start" press play,
no matter what the player does, do nothing for at least 5 minutes, (Even if the CD ejects)
upgrade should be done.

MPEG4Modifier doesn't support OpenDML AVIs. Otherwise it works just fine but I imagine that Pioneer could fix the packed bitstream bug with firmware. Or not?
I've read on some German boards that gufiak would release a modified 1.20 soon. But this is almost one month ago. I still keeps my fingers crossed for it

Have just downgraded from original 1.20 to 1.09 without problems and it seems like a great mod. But I've heard that 1.20 has improved MPEG4 support...

What did you do when the disc came out?
I have just bought DV-380 and it's fw is 1.09. I live in Serbia, so codepage for easteuropean (latin) languages is ok for me. It is CP1250?
I have read all 20 pages of this topic, but still I am interesed (and confused) in your opinion, what should I do:
1) Replace original fw 1.09 with original 1.20 - if yes, with which 1.20 firmware, i've found two - one: 1.57 MB (1,647,296 bytes) and another: 1.52 MB (1,598,468 bytes). I still cannot find any pioneer web site with link for d/l original 1.20.
Should it correct problems with subtitles font size and add more flexibility when choosing subtitles?
2) Flash DV-380 with Gufiak's 1.09.02 - but it is based on 1.09 and relatively old fw?
3) Wait for Gufiak's (and sub3ero's of course) fw based on original fw 1.20
4) Something else or none of above

Thank you all and many thanks for your effort
The original 1.20 fw is 1.598.468 byte (according to pioneer.wassberg.info). This should apparently support better MPEG4 playback but still has issues with packed bitstream files. I don't know if it corrects subtitle problems.
I also bought DV-380 recently but with original 1.20. Still I downgraded to the modified 1.09.02 because I think it has some essential settings which is lacking in the original firmware.
You can always upgrade to a modified 1.20 later on when it becomes available.
Thank you APu for your quick answer.
Ok, i'll downgrade on 1.09.02 (and upgrade many of the features

)
Hm, since present firmware is 1.09, it is still upgrade rather than downgrade.
Sorry for this notice and mistake in earlier post
You're welcome. You should always be able to update the original firmware with a modified one even though it's based on the same version. I downgraded from original 1.20 to modified 1.09.02. Then I updated 1.09.02 with a new background and filebrowser of my own

Not sure if this has been addressed before but after buying a new projector I tried it out by playing Finding Nemo, and to my surprise the red-orange fish was almost green-brown, I was sure it was something with my component video cables or the projector, but it turned out to be the DVD player itself. I took some comparing shots playing the movie with the DV380 and a laptop on the same LCD-TV.
I’m using the v.01.09.02.00 firmware.

Anyone noticed differences in color with the original firmware or the modified? Perhaps my player is broken.

Another bunch of stupid questions...sorry!
I posted something a few weeks back and only now have had the chance to come back and take a look at any replies. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I had any.
Basically, I'm completely in the dark about all this firmware stuff and have not much idea about DVD or computer techy stuff either.
As my old Samsung 790 (remote hacked to be region free) is close to being sent to the DVD player graveyard, I'm about to get a Pioneer 380 (I'm in Belgium if that makes a difference) and would like to make it region free. It looks like if I download a firmware upgrade from this site, I can do that but I'm really confused about what version I need, whether all the versions will make the player region free and I can use the latest or whether I need to use an earlier version.
Could someone help me out with some really basic stuff?
- am I right in thinking the firmware upgrade makes the player region free without the need for any "chipping" or remote hacks?
- what verison of firmware upgrade do I need to make the player region free
- is there any special way (or specific software) I need to burn the CD with the firmware - actually, I'm not even sure how to burn a CD!
- what else does the firmware do (though I'm really only bothered about the region free facility)
- Finally, I've read - but not understood - that there can be an problem with Pionner/Sony incompatibility - on some models a faint line appears on the screen. My tv is a Sony KV29 LS 35B (EU model capable of NTSC playback). Does anyone know if the problem will occur?
I don't want to end up with a player that I can't make region free so any help - preferably "step-by-step" - would be really appreciated
1) Yes, you are.
2) Use this -1.09.02 gufiak's fw:

5) No there are no incompatibilities, i own Sony KV29FX66, european model and everything works fine.

3°) Update you 380

I have no problem when I start the movie from the beginning. I can switch between the subtitles, the player shows the language of the subtitle correctly. But if I use search, or start the movie from a different position, only the first subtitle will show. I can switch between them, but the second is not displayed. Any ideas?

1.21? 1.09 is starting to sound archaic (but I bet Gufaik's file browser still makes it worth keeping his modded fw).
Shame Pioneer won't issue a change log (and improve their filebrowser).
