I've taken a high-rez file, used the resize filter in Virtualdubmod, and then played it on my DV-588-AS.

The firmware loaded well, I was able to play different zones DVDs.

Except the following problem:

Every time I want to turn on the DVD I have to press "stop" and then press the "Standby/on" button in the front pabel, so it restores the factory presets.

Otherwise it turns on, but I see the screen with distorted horizontal lines moving up and down.

Any advice on how to avoid this every time I turn the unit on?

Someone already got or tried new DV-393-S and DV-696-AV players?

How good, or bad, they are? And about the chipset included? DV696AV must be DivX Ultra compatible, too, but I'm specially interested to know if either of these will play correctly XVID movies with the famous PACKED BITSTREAM feature and files. With or without official firmware (well, I suppose no modified firmware exists... yet).

I would want to know also about codepage 1252 support and subtitle handling, if they are able to show correctly subtitles on-screen, and spanish special language chars.

I looked inside this and do belive, this is probably the same or nearly the same player as dv-380. The problem is, that till now no one extracted firmware from this. As soon it is not extracted, it would be difficult to say something more. And if dv393 firmware is released, making codepage 1252 support is easy as half a litre of beer

It depends. There are xvid files with PB that plays without any problems. Packed Bitstream is just not-fully supported.

If you buy it with Spanish OSD you may be sure it would support Spanish special characters, and CP1252.

I do not know if Philips is better or not. Dv-380 is a good player, depending what you are expecting from it. If you do not need 5.1 decoder built-in player, dv-380 is a very good player.
If you thing to buy dv-393 and have a question it worths it's money, I would say that if you buy dv-380, for 100% you get at least the same player but better Better, because "cheaper" and better, because "you can upgrade it with Gufiak's modded Firmware, that is far far more user-friendly that original Pioneer's.
I do not beliwe that if you buy dv-393 you can not upgrade it with Gufiaks mod. But as I carefully follow that subject on internet, no one still knows, if it was possible.
So, buing dv-380 is for sure better solution.

And tell me what does rely "Divx Ultra" mean? Does anyone here knows, exactly? Isn't just marketing tool? Thay say that 696 supports DivX 6. But in fact 380 supports it too. All those players got the same MTK chipset that is a little bit too slow to support HDDivX. So what DivXUltra exactly means? For sure this is not GMC and Qpel support!

Uhmmm... seems DV-585 have same problem, and I don't know why... or why a modded firmware is not able to fix this and bypass these nasty but very few real bytes N-VOPS. Most DVD players "supporting" packed bitstream really do it up to 2-3 multiple bframe with PB, but I found people and various forums commeting about PB for previous Pioneer DVD-Players working with some files, and not with some others, but no real reason or data. Quite confusing!

Not so rure , I know many players and tried also some ones, than even having multiple OSD (more likely worldwide brand names like Pionner, Philips, LG) and enough rom (flash) and ram, does not support it :-(

Well, I can live without DivX6, really, I would prefer live without DivX6 (it's not for DV-383 anyway, only for DV-696), but big players like Pionner and others often forget about updates, and simply release new products continuosly, so it's supposed new products released to market have some fixes from previous, new hardware and core, and more options (supposed and possible, not true).

As for GMC and Qpel , I read about it being supported in DV-585 series, up to level 3. Wrong?

What "DivX Ultra" mean? Well, 1) Pay money and royalties 2) Show the logo to sell better 3) What really should mean.. most players actually can only work, if doing, with the main stream (audio, video, subtitles) of the whole DivX6 specs, so these new players certified Ultra, must deal and support this. Really useful or need? NO . Specially when they are unable and not interested to fix years-old, easy, continuos uses, and real-life features like like show correctly chars and subtitles, show clear menus, show full file names and contents, and many other stuff people ask, only found most times in modded firmware.

Much very difficult to dedice now... I just checked prices.. seems, like DV-585, that DV-380 stock is being pulled of, and DV-380 harder to buy, with price for DV-380-S around 78 (euros), DV-383-S around 88 (euros), and DV-696 still totally unknow in catalogs or price.

I just updated my Pioneer DV-2850 with the latest firmware. The first couple of DVD's I tried, I immediately noticed that the "red line" underlining the menu choice (like play movie, select language, etc.) was not displaying properly. It was significantly off where it was supposed to be.

It is very well known bug in Gufiak's mod. Just wait (lliterally) couple of day's. In newest mod this bug is fixed and there will be some more new add-ons in it .
At the moment, we have some temporary technical problems with server were Gufiak's site is set. But in few days (maximaly 60 hours) it will work. New Gufiak's firmware is prepared to be released.



Pity but truth - GMC and Qpel are not supported at all! Dv-380/2850/585 are funcionally the same players, working on the same software. Differences are only in look and that 585 got's built-in 5.1 decoder and unlocked supporting DVD-Audio and SACD, nothing more.

Regarding to DivXUltra, my question was more rhetorical. Ofcourse, it is just about better sell, not more real funcionallity.

In new Gufiak's mod you may rather expect much more to improve subtitle reading and displaying.
According to picture improving, there will be still lots of things to be corrected in Pioneers fw.
Gufiak is still very busy with his studies, he has so many projects to make, so he has not enough time to do everything he would like to do.
Remember, moding the firmware is sort of "backward engineering", that is not so easy, as we can imagine. As one of our colleagues says: "It is similar to fixing a car through exhausting tube". Please, do not expect miracles. Gufiak is just a mortal man, as all of us And all he does is with agreement to his actual knowledge (which is not so easy to get, neither) and free time (sometimes more difficult to get ), to spend hours, reading cca. 1 688 000 bytes of code
New Gufiak's mod is based on 1.09 fw, as modding any other version needs too much time, now.

Sounds great.. maybe Mr. Gufiak does know about the Packed Bitstream problems, too (why some work, and why some others don't), and can search some way to skip any type and number of PB (I understand this has not been added or fixed yet in the firmware, if I'm wrong, excuse me, I didn't read and understand correctly this thread).

I think many people would use this firmware and buy compatible players only due to this "feature". I read many other different forums and about others players now, and everybody is asking and requesting the same: PB, subtitles, and menu look specially related with file names lenght and format. However, seems no player of firmware does-it all, I found at least two announced to have fully fixed the PB issue, but introducing new problems and bugs, and the hardware and player not so fine and advanced like Pioneer ones .

A 'Gufiak DVD-393-S' would be terrible, now, too

I tried different resolutions for my 588, the maximum I got is 720X. above that, a pioneer logo will be displayed.
my TV is NTSC and using the regular S-Video input. maybe I should switch to component input.
I guess resolution over 720X may only be available on system other than NTSC.

- Fixed bug of incorrect displaying position of cursor in DVD menu
- unblocked 4 speeds of fast forwarding for DivX/xvid films. Rewinding is still one, fastest speed.
- fixed some problems with reading subtitles for divx/xvid
- Now the player reads all available subtitles in film folder, even if the subtitle file name differs then film name. It is possible to choose them using Subtitle key on remote control
- intelligent subtitle line cut. It means that if subtitle line is too long and do not fit to the TV screen, the player cuts it just to fit the screen in more rows.

OK, here is my modification of Gufiaks firmware. It should now support CP1250 - EASTERN EUROPE subtitles. I used bacground and fonts from great 1.09.02_gufiak_subz3ro_rev.3 firmware. My thanks to Subz3ro for his fonts (now the largest font is even bigger). And great thanks to Gufiak for all his great work.
I tested this firmware on my dv-380 and it works fine. You are upgrading on Your own risk.
EDIT:My appologies, it seems my first version did not support CP1250 in file browser. Now it is fixed in rev.2

hi! i'm very satisfied with new firmware for pioneer dvd player, but in some divx there is no sound when i put them in player. what to do?

That's not very good for series, if all episodes are in the root folder of the dvd disk.

When I was preparing new Gufiak's firmware to be released, I forgot to write in ChageLog that AT FIRST, the player reads subtitle file with the same file name as film.
If the player does not find the same names in subtitle file and film, it reads all available subtitle files.
Hope, it sounds better now.

Does this new 01.09.03 version correct the 01.09.02 issue with stuttering due to fontsize not a multiple of 4?

After loading the new firmware and testing it with some series, I've noted exactly what you wrote. I'll look for a subtitle with more than 45 characters on one line, to see how wrapping works.

My subtitles are like this:
movie.avi
movie.ro.srt
movie.en.srt

but when changing subtitles the english is recognized and displayed, but the romanian don't (it looks like Subtitle 1/2).

After switching subtitles, if they do not appear on a screen, press PAUSE - FF - PLAY thay should came back. This usually happens at films with 5+ AC3 audio, isn't it?
It is still much better then it was before, as on previous FW, we were unable to watch any multiple subtitles at films with AC3 5+ . Gufiak even made a patch for that that worked very good, but unfortunately it was a reason for desinchronization audio with video in some .avi films. As he had no time to fix that, he finally decided to release FW without this patch. But for sure next mod (if, any would be made) will have this fixed to work perfect.

Ok, enough talking... here are my modded firmwares with "jerky-free" (x4) fonts and stylish theme:
CP1250 ... Eastern European (instead of codepage, outline of font is switchable)
CP1251 - CP1254 ... Cyrillic, Latin1, Greek, Turkish
CP1255 - CP1258 ... Hebrew, Arabic, Baltic, Vietnamese
For detailed information on code pages, please refer to included Code Page Summary PDF file.
Note that for specific languages in CP1255 - CP1258 archive, where reading backwards is required, this feature is missing. Either use my font and implement it to sickboy666's FW that has this feature implemented within, or live with it (if you can).

I'm afraid I wasn't too precise. I want to say that the word Romanian, or Ro, doesn't display on the top of the screen, instead of English when changing subtitles. Otherwise, all the subtitles are shown very well, since the 1.09.02 version.

Anyway, I'm gratefull to Gufiak for this firmware and I wish him to take the exams with maximum grade!
...and I definitelly look for a 1.20/1.21 patched firmware, for the RGB problem.

I have a Pioneer DV-383 and the fufiak's firmware 1.09.03.00.
I can't see some subtitles in some divx.
For example, I have a DVD with a folder (named 'Deconstructing Harry (1997)') with 3 files:
Deconstructing.Harry.(1997).avi
descont_harry.srt
descont_harry-eng.srt

'descont_harry.srt' is in spanish.
But i can't see any subtitles, they show me: 'subtitles -/-'

The same happened with a folder (named 'Hiroshima mon amour (1959) [JAP-FRA]') with these files:

In boot case, the files srt are good.

Anyway, some people here used to like my mod of Gufiak's firmware, with some kind of even larger fonts.
There are also other cosmetic modifications in this modded firmware.
No matter what, I do not force people downloading my modded firmware. I do modify it for my own pleaseure,
to suite my personal needs for details... and it's only my good will I share it here on forum.
If there is any problem with these modded firmwares, I can remove the link from the forum, though.

I have been using your modded firmware since you first posted it without any problems and I am now absolutely happy with your 1.09.03 version. I don't see any reason for your quoted reaction, it must be some kind of misunderstanding. There are not many people in this forum adding real value but you are definitely one of them.

But speaking of removing links I may have one suggestion though:
I also tried the modded firmware from Pomo and experienced losses of color to black and white during the normal playback of a divx movie (my video settings are correctly set to PAL, not this kind of problem). After switching to Subz3ro firmware everything works just fine.
Anybody else had similar experience?

@JiMo: I had no such problems with my firmware. I do not consider myself to be a firmware modder, I just added Subz3ro fonts so that new firmware would support CP1250, and that is all. In everythig else exept the background my firmware is exactly the same as Gufiaks. If it coused any trouble to anyone in this forum they have my sincere appologies.

I suppose I better explain exactly, what I meant asking my question.

As I was testing this FW for last few months. I made several, my own, test-mods. There was one, with totally different fonts to try, if those fonts with width not multiplied by 4, makes any problems. When you mentioned it, I was just frightened, I erroneously released one of my test-mods, instead of original Gufiak's, that he asked me for.

I never meant you do something wrong sharing your modifications.

Oh, and I don't know if anyone else has the same problem with official 1.09, but when I let my player running on repeat, it turns off after a while.

I don't know if it's intentional, if the firmware has a bug or if there's an hardware problem.

I an considering trying this out but I have a Pioneer 383S. Does that S make this not workable or is it nothing to bother with?

I see there is a setting that skips all the forced warnings and trailers but the menu as well. Is there a way to skip the forced warnings but not the menu? Also is there a way to turn off forced subtitles in whole? I have a French Definitive Betty Boop Collection and the only way to turn the French subtitiles off is during each 5-8 minute short. Turning it off once does not turn it off on the following short and this is the main reason I am considering doing this as it is rather annoying.

Or does anybody else know how can I make this model to read multisession discs and to accept larger filenames for external subs. Also an updgrade for divx would be great.

Reads multisession DVD-RW also +RW.
So you may use it, until it is full. Then burn final disc-at-once DVD-R, erase DVD-RW and use again.

Not automatically, but "prohibit" is off, so you can use your remote to either skip the warning or go through it at high speed (depending on which function is accepted, but one of them WILL work).


Not completely sure, but I think that the subtitles are mandatory, because the copyrights on this edition have been paid for France exclusively. This is a common practice on French releases.

Try on a "regular" DVD player, if I am right, you won't be able to suppress them.

This is unfortunately a well known problem of this player. It can read some subtitles perfectly, whereas for some obscure reasons it cannot read some others. From my experience, unless the filename is unusually long (i.e. more than 50 chars), it does not matter what filename the subs has. In my case, I had tried renaming a movie as a.avi and a.srt the sub files, but it could still not read it. (the subs are always a txt file) Unfortunately the problem seems to have persisted even with the latest version of Gufiak's firmware modification.
